Are We There Yet? 3 Reasons Why Bollywood Has A Lot Of (Orgasmic) Homework To Do

Are We There Yet? 3 Reasons Why Bollywood Has A Lot Of (Orgasmic) Homework To Do thumbnail

“Guess what an orgasm is called in Hindi, ladies? Charam Sukh,” said Shikha Talsania in Veere Di Wedding. But that’s precisely how far the conversation went. While the dialogue created quite a buzz, no one really cared about it beyond a point. The instance further highlights a gnawing truth: Bollywood still has a long way to go as far as covering sensitized topics (effectively) is concerned.

Giving credit where it’s due, we must applaud the industry for initiating conversations about taboo topics, but it also appears that these ‘progressive’ movies in question have only scratched the surface. Case in point: Kiara Advani’s episode on Lust Stories. She is guided by Neha Dhupia on how to use a vibrator for pleasure. A great start. But soon, you are introduced to a scene where she obnoxiously makes faces while orgasming. None of the women could relate to the scene. Because, well, orgasms don’t look like that for them in real life. Not at all.

Not too long ago, Lipstick Under My Burkha explored a similar subject: fantasies of older women. However, the scenes where Ratna Pathak Shah is shown experiencing orgasms (and subsequently running to shower) totally miss the spot (pun unintended). Truth be told, did the scene do justice in terms of portraying the shame women are usually bound to feel after masturbating? Yes. Was it convincing enough? Maybe not.

Last but not least, Four More Shots Please turned out to be a real bummer as far as the portrayal of women’s orgasms is concerned. Sayani Gupta is shown engaging in hot sex, shortly after which the guy asks if she climaxed after he does. First of all, that never happens. Then, there are some really odd movements by Gupta, as she twitches on the bed, again something that one can’t relate to. Well, it does not end here, in another scene, she is imagining a hot sesh with Milind Soman (lucky girl), but again fails to make it look real. Soman tries to find her G-Spot only to locate it in due course of time.

So, Bollywood, while we are grateful for taking the first step, the women audience definitely thinks that you can do better. Here’s hoping for more realistic orgasm scenes in the future.
