New Delhi: A day after Union home minister Amit Shah specifically instructed Delhi Police not to spare anyone involved in the Jahangirpuri communal violence, five persons allegedly involved in the violence were slapped with the stringent National Security Act. Among those booked under the law are Ansar Sheikh, the alleged “main conspirator” behind the violence, and Sonu, who was seen in a video opening fire during the violence on Saturday, officials said. The others who have been booked are Salim Chikna, Dilshad and Aheed.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Police submitted a preliminary report on the violence to the home ministry. Special commissioner (law and order) Dependra Pathak said that the force was probing the ‘larger conspiracy’ that led to the violence.
The home ministry said that it was monitoring the situation and additional forces would be deployed in troubled areas till normalcy returned. The report gave details on the police response time, FIR registered, suspects arrested and weapons seized.
When asked how policemen were present to monitor VHP’s Sobha Yatra on Hanuman Jayanti, if no permission was given for the event, Pathak said: “Police focus on maintaining law and order. If any situation erupts during a congregation, we have to see that the situation doesn’t worsen and that was the reason adequate policemen were there. Delhi Police has been able to contain the situation in minimum possible time with no injuries to civilians.”
More than 500 police personnel and six companies of additional force have been stationed in the area. Drones have been deployed in sensitive areas for surveillance, police said.
