SINGAPORE: Yeo Jia Min clinched bronze for Singapore in the women’s singles at the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Sunday (Aug 7 local time) after overcoming a spirited battle from Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour.

At the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, world number 19 Yeo saw off world number 17 Gilmour 21-14, 22-20.

The 23-year-old’s bronze is Singapore’s first medal in the event since 2002. At that edition of the Games in Manchester, Li Li won gold for Singapore.

Earlier on Sunday, Yeo battled hard against world number 7 PV Sindhu but lost 19-21, 17-21 in the semi-finals.

In the men’s singles bronze medal match, Yeo’s compatriot Jason Teh missed out on a medal after he was beaten 15-21, 18-21 by India’s world number 13 Srikanth Kidambi.

The Singaporean looked to have sustained an injury in the second game, but still stretched his opponent in an epic match.

World number 87 Teh had faced India’s Lakshya Sen earlier in the semi-finals. Teh fell 10-21,21-18,16-21 to the world number 10.

Singapore’s last remaining representatives in the badminton competition at the Games are mixed doubles duo of Jessica Tan and Terry Hee, who upset Malaysia’s top seeded pairing of Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing on Sunday.

Tan and Hee, who are 35th in the world, will face England’s Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith in the final on Monday. Ellis and Smith are world number 10.
