The entertainment industry was recently rocked by news of Marvel Studios parting ways with one of its most influential executives, Victoria Alonso. With 17 years of experience at the company, Alonso held various positions, including president of physical production and post-production, visual effects and animation. A new book titled “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,” written by Joanna Robinsonsheds light on the disagreements between Victoria Alonso and Kevin Feige that preceded his dismissal. The book highlights how Alonso crossed a critical line by speaking publicly against then-Disney CEO, Bob Chapekin April 2022. This action, considered by Feige to be a violation of one of his “cardinal rules”, triggered a series of events that ultimately led to Alonso’s departure.

Controversy arose when Chapek did not oppose an anti-LGBTQIA+ bill in Florida known as “Don’t Say Gay.” This bill prohibited the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. As part of the LGBTQIA+ community, Alonso publicly spoke out against Chapek’s position, resulting in him being banned from press related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The book also reveals that Kevin Feige He urged Alonso to stay focused on her work and avoid speaking publicly about controversial issues. A source close to the matter reported that Feige warned her that she had “overstepped her role” and suggested that she focus on her job responsibilities instead of taking public positions on sensitive issues.

Another point of conflict highlighted in the book is Alonso’s refusal to follow instructions to remove LGBTQIA+ symbols from the film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – 60% to allow its launch in certain foreign markets. In early 2023, it was reported that Alonso resisted fulfilling this request, causing tension at the studio. Ultimately, the removal of these symbols was carried out without her cooperation, which she demonstrated was a betrayal.

The employment relationship between Kevin Feige and Victoria Alonso gradually deteriorated due to these disagreements and Feige’s perception that Alonso had crossed important lines. However, it’s important to note that Feige was not involved in the decision to fire Alonso, despite his 17-year history at Marvel Studios.

Victoria Alonso’s departure raises the question of whether this decision will have a positive impact on Marvel Studios. Her time at the company was marked by accusations of creating a toxic work environment for visual effects artists and for allegedly taking creative control from directors in the making of films. Additionally, her breach of contract due to her work at rival studio Amazon on the Oscar-nominated film “Argentina, 1985” resulted in her dismissal in March 2023.

Although a new executive has yet to be named to replace Alonso, it is possible that Marvel Studios is considering dividing its extensive responsibilities into more than one person. This could lead to a more collaborative and efficient structure in the studio.

On the other hand, visual effects artists at Marvel Studios recently voted to unionize and are seeking an agreement with the studio that includes fair pay, healthcare, a safe and sustainable work environment, as well as respect for their work. This initiative could help improve working conditions at Marvel Studios and ensure fair treatment for those who contribute to the success of the MCU films and series.
