Howe: ‘Unique’ supporters pushed Newcastle past Wolves thumbnail

Eddie Howe lauded the “unique” Newcastle United crowd at St James’ Park after his side edged past Wolves on Friday evening.

Chris Wood scored the only goal of the game via the penalty spot as the Magpies ended their three-game losing streak in the Premier League.

Five clubs, like Everton, who looked too good to go down

Howe told Sky Sports:  “Massive tonight. It was the kind of game we expected it to be. Wolves make it difficult for you. We had our moments. It took a penalty to win the game but the players gave everything again.

“I am so pleased for Chris Wood. You could see him filling in on the left of midfield. He is a willing lad. The goal will do wonders for him. I am pleased he stepped up and took it.

“Bruno Guimaeres is going to be a mainstay of the team. The difficulty is that we went on that winning run and it was difficult to break the midfield up. He got his opportunity today and I thought he was excellent. He offered a different dimension. I am excited by what he can bring to the team.

“We still have work to do but that was a massive step forward tonight. It brings us closer to safety. I hope there will be a different Newcastle in the future but we have to play a certain way to get results at the moment.”

He added: “Playing here is such a unique experience. The crowd really helped us today. We have to harness it. The relationship between us and the supporters is everything.

“It is a city built on football. We have to repay that support and passion with hard work and dedication. We will endeavour to do that every day we are here.

“It will be great to be looking up and playing with a different pressure. It was a massive step forward tonight but there is still work to do.”

Howe emphasised the importance of the home crowd, telling the BBC:  “You want to enjoy playing at home. I think in recent weeks the supporters have created a great atmosphere. I think the supporters are enjoying seeing a team willing to run and fight for every ball.

“I think it was a sense of achievement off the back of three defeats and a disappointing second half against Tottenham.

“It has put us in a stronger position but I still think we have work to do. The home games are key for us but we want to pick up points wherever we go.

“I think with the type of game it was [against Wolves] it was easy for us to lose shape and discipline and commit too many forward. I think the discipline and responsibility we showed was really good.

“At this stage of the season it is about results. We are well aware we need to continue to get points. I think it’s results over performances at the moment. There will be a time when we can evolve.”
