The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has promised to ensure that the glitches which marred the 25th February elections would not reoccur in the governorship elections on Saturday.

This was disclosed by the INEC Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye while speaking on Arise TV today.

Revealing that the commission had learnt valuable lessons from the presidential and National Assembly elections, Okoye noted that election materials would arrive at the polling units early enough on Saturday.

Okoye hinted that INEC is going to put those “lessons into their planning purposes and processes, and into our deployment purposes.”

Okoye speaks on the commission’s preparedness

The INEC commissioner revealed that both the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines and all the sensitive election materials have left the Central Bank and the various state offices of the federation. He explained that the early deployment will ensure that all polling units open on time.

Okoye explained that they reconfigured all the BVAS that will be used for Saturday’s election to make sure that the BVAS performs optimally.

Also, he stated that INEC gave refresher training to all categories of staff that would be involved in the elections.

Furthermore, Okoye noted that the country would be having 28 governorship elections and 993 state assembly constituency elections.

According to him, “It’s a huge election and INEC will be paying very close attention to what is going on in the various states.”

The electoral umpire has been dragged for failing to upload results as early as possible during the presidential election. This is one of the reasons why major opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour party are rejecting the presidential poll result where Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner.
