Engineers are inspecting a pedestrian bridge in Northeast D.C. to make sure it’s safe after it was struck by the load of a truck Wednesday morning.

It happened around 11 a.m. near Douglas Street Northeast. The bridge is still standing but pieces of debris litter the southbound lanes of D.C. 295, which remain closed while District Department of Transportation engineers check out the damage.

Authorities said the truck continued driving after striking the bridge, and it doesn’t appear anyone was hurt.

The closures extend from Polk Street Northeast to Eastern Avenue Northeast, D.C. police said. Southbound traffic is being diverted to U.S. 50 in Maryland, and there’s no access to D.C. 295 from U.S. 50 or from Maryland 295/201.

Northbound traffic, meanwhile, is being diverted at Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue Northeast, with northbound delays starting before Pennsylvania Avenue Northeast, which continue to grow, D.C. police said.

The bridge that was hit Wednesday is about a mile north of the pedestrian bridge at Lane Place over DC-295 that was struck in a similar way more than two years ago.

The Lane Plane Pedestrian Bridge was demolished after it was struck by a truck in June 2021 and construction was set to begin earlier this year.

Below is the area where Wednesday’s crash happened.
