Prince Harry’s book Spare goes on sale in London

Prince Harry should understand revealing his niece Princess Charlotte cried over a bridesmaid dress could lead to her being teased, a royal expert has said.

In his memoir Spare, which was released today, Harry revealed the exchange between Meghan Markle and his sister-in-law the Princess of Wales over Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress.

The memoir states that the small dresses for Charlotte and the other young bridesmaids were hand-sewn based on measurements and it wasn’t a shock they would need altering.

Harry says Kate told Meghan Charlotte’s dress was “too big, too long and too baggy” and that the youngster “cried when she tried it on” – and Kate added that the dresses needed to be remade.

The Duke continues saying Meghan had told Kate she was dealing with the fall-out of her father Thomas revealing he would not be attending the nuptials, which Kate is said to have acknowledged saying that she was “well aware” but the wedding was in four days.

After a back and forth, Harry says Kate was persuaded to take the dress to a tailor but Meghan was left sobbing after the exchange – although Kate did apologise.

And royal writer and editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine Ingrid Seward says Harry revealing this put him “at odds” with his dislike at conversations being leaked.

She told the Mirror: “Prince Harry ’s dislike of personal conversations being repeated or ‘leaked’ as he calls it, is at odds with the content of his biography Spare.

“Take one instance when Harry describes the row over the bridesmaids’ dresses; ‘Charlotte cried when she tried her dress on’.

“He writes ‘Kate complained Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy.’ Looking at the photographs Kate was certainly correct, none of the couture bridesmaids’ frocks fitted properly, especially Charlotte’s which was all over the place.

“Wedding tensions and the ensuing disagreement with Kate were blamed for him eventually finding Meghan on the floor sobbing. How sad a bridesmaid dress made her cry when her father had suffered a heart attack, but it is always the little things that affect you in times of extreme stress.

Harry and Meghan with William and Kate last year after the death of the Queen

Spare by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, has been the most anticipated book of the year – full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Now it’s officially launched this Tuesday, 10th January, below is where you can get your hands on a copy of the must-have book!

“Harry’s willingness to repeat the two women’s text and verbal exchanges verbatim is at total odds with his insistence on privacy. His excuse is ‘the truth needs to be there’.

“Oh Harry, if only you had checked all your versions of the truth before you wrote your book, you might not be so confused. You are not doing yourself, your wife or your lawyers who are trying to sort out your many litigious dealings, any favours.

“Princess Charlotte is your niece. She is almost eight and old enough to be teased by her fellow pupils at school for crying because her couture dress didn’t fit her. Harry of all people should understand that.

“His aggression with Kate, the sister-in-law with whom he was once so close, is just a childlike payback for what he considers is her being disloyal to Meghan. Kate immediately did the clever thing and took some flowers around to Meghan as a peace offering.

“It will take more than flowers for Harry to make up with both the Prince and Princess of Wales. They are surely feeling angry and betrayed that Harry decided to make money out of his immediate family in this disloyal way.”

Bookshops in the UK opened early today as Harry’s tell-all book Spare hit the shelves – but queues were sparse following leaks ahead of the publication and early sales in Spain.

But it is still set to become one of the biggest books of the year and one of the best-selling pre-order titles of the past decade, according to industry experts.

Ingrid Seward is editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine and the author of William and Harry. Spare by Prince Harry and published by Penguin Random House is out now.
