Signal No. 2 up in 4 Luzon provinces as 'Neneng' escalates into a tropical storm thumbnail

SIGNAL No. 2 is up over at least four provinces in Luzon as “Neneng” escalated into a tropical storm, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Saturday.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin, Pagasa said Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Apayao, the northern portion of Abra (Tineg, Lacub and Lagayan) and Ilocos Norte have been placed under Signal No. 2 immediately after Neneng developed into a storm.

Meanwhile, Signal No. 1 is raised over the northern portion of Isabela (Santa Maria, San Pablo, Maconacon, Divilacan, Palanan, Ilagan City, Tumauini, Cabagan, Santo Tomas, Quezon, Delfin Albano, Mallig, Quirino, Gamu and Roxas), Kalinga, the rest of Abra, the northern portion of Mountain Province (Paracelis, Natonin, Barlig, Sadanga, Bontoc, Sagada and Besao), and the northern portion of Ilocos Sur (Sinait, Cabugao, San Juan, Magsingal, Santo Domingo, San Ildefonso, San Vicente, Santa Catalina, Bantay, City of Vigan, Santa, Caoayan, Narvacan, Nagbukel, Santa Maria, San Esteban, Santiago, Burgos, Banayoyo, Lidlidda, San Emilio, Quirino, Gregorio del Pilar, Galimuyod, City of Candon, Santa Lucia and Salcedo) also in Luzon.

Based on the weather bureau’s forecast track, the tropical storm may pass very close or make landfall in the vicinity of Babuyan Islands or Batanes Sunday morning.

Then it is likely to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday, Pagasa said.

Projected to reach severe tropical storm category while moving in the vicinity of Babuyan Islands-Batanes area, Neneng may further intensify into a typhoon on Tuesday, it said.

Estimated at 255 kilometers east Southeast of Calayan, Cagayan or 230 kms east of Aparri, Cagayan, Neneng is moving westward at 30 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 65kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80kph, the latest bulletin said.

Pagasa said heavy to intense with at times torrential rains may prevail over Batanes, the northern portion of mainland Cagayan, Babuyan Islands and Ilocos Norte while moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Ilocos Sur and the rest of mainland Cagayan until Sunday.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains may be experienced over the northern portion of Isabela and the rest of Ilocos Region and Cordillera Administrative Region due to the storm.

The weather agency said the trough of Neneng and the convergence of its circulation with the southwesterly winds may also bring occasional rains over the western portions of Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) and Western Visayas.

Pagasa said the most likely highest wind signal that will be raised is Signal No. 3.

Neneng and localized thunderstorms are also affecting Metro Manila and the rest of the country where partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may be experienced, it said.
