Tim Walberg’s pro-Israel sign found defaced with red handprints

Rep. Tim Walberg said a pro-Israel sign posted outside his congressional office was vandalized in what he called “another despicable act” of antisemitism.

The sign, “I Stand With Israel,” was defaced with graffiti of two red handprints, as shown in a photo released Thursday by the congressman’s office.

“We’ve seen many examples of Hamas sympathizers ripping down posters of innocent hostages,” Mr. Walberg, Michigan Republican, said Thursday on social media. “Now, right here in the House office buildings, we see more cowardly acts of vandalism targeting those standing against terrorism.”

He added that the vandalism “only strengthens our resolve.”
Mr. Walberg cited preliminary data from the Anti-Defamation League that found reports of antisemitic harassment, vandalism and assault during the two weeks after Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 terror attack on Israeli civilians jumped by 388% from the same period last year.

“ADL recorded a total of 312 antisemitic incidents between Oct. 7-23, 2023, 190 of which were directly linked to the war in Israel and Gaza,” said the group said in a Tuesday report. “By comparison, during the same period in 2022, ADL received preliminary reports of 64 incidents, including four that were Israel-related.”

The congressman said that antisemitism “has run rampant across the country.”

“This is yet another despicable act which should not be tolerated,” Mr. Walberg said in a statement. “At a time like this, we must think of our Jewish community members, including those on my staff, who are enduring this targeted behavior and harassment following the largest attack on Jews since the Holocaust.”
