What To Watch This Weekend: ‘HSMTMTS’ Season 2, MTV Movie & TV Awards & More thumbnail

Prepare to binge-watch! This weekend features so many series, movies, and more to sit down and obsess over. From the ‘HSMTMTS’ season 2 premiere to Angelina Jolie’s new film, here is what’s worth watching this weekend.

May is full of so much quality TV, and there’s more than enough new content to go around. This weekend alone includes the season 2 premiere of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, as well as the premieres of new shows like Run The World and The Underground Railroad. On top of that, there are brand-new movies to enjoy.

HollywoodLife has rounded up the key things to watch this weekend. There’s a variety of new content that’s coming out, so there’s something for everyone. From the Netflix limited series Halston to the MTV Movie & TV Awards, here’s a list of notable movies and TV shows to watch from May 14 to May 16 across networks and streaming services.

‘HSMTMTS’ Season 2

The hit Disney+ series is back and better than ever. The season 2 premiere of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series dropped May 14 on Disney+. After the success of East High’s High School Musical production, the drama club is taking things to a new level with a spring production of Beauty and the Beast. They’ll be going head-to-head with North High, led by recurring star Derek Hough. From the start of season 2, changes are running rampant, especially when Nini leaves for Denver to attend the Youth Actors Conservatory. The young cast is so delightful and talented. They are all able to showcase their incredible skills in so many new ways this season. New episodes will drop Fridays.

MTV Movie & TV Awards

The MTV Movie & TV Awards are expanding this year with an epic 2-night Los Angeles takeover honoring the biggest and best in movies and television. Kicking things off on May 16 will be the MTV Movie & TV Awards, hosted by the hilarious Leslie Jones. The ceremony will air live at 9 p.m. ET on MTV. Presenters include Addison Rae, Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Jacob Elordi, Justin Hartley, Mandy Moore, Tom Hiddleston, and so many more. The winners of the scripted categories will be announced during the show. Scarlett Johansson will also receive the Generation Award. The following night, Nikki Glaser will host the first-ever MTV Movie & TV Awards: UNSCRIPTED at 9 p.m. ET.

‘The Underground Railroad’

The Underground Railroad is one of the best new shows of 2021. The series premiered May 14 on Amazon Prime Video. Academy Award-winner Barry Jenkins directs the show, which is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead. The limited series chronicles Cora Randall’s desperate bid for freedom in the Antebellum South. Cora is played by The Underground Railroad breakout star Thuso Mbedu. Additional cast includes Chase W. Dillon, Aaron Pierre, Joel Edgerton, Justice Leak, Damon Herriman, William Jackson Harper, and Lily Rabe.

‘Sweet Carolina’

Sweet Carolina is a new Hallmark movie premiering May 15 at 9 p.m. ET on Hallmark Channel. Hallmark queen Lacey Chabert stars as a marketing executive named Josie, who returns to her small hometown when she becomes the unexpected guardian of her niece and nephew. Upon her return, she reconnects with Cooper, her high school boyfriend. Tyler Hynes, Gregory Harrison, and Teryl Rothery star alongside Lacey in this heartfelt story about love and hope.

‘The Rookie’ Season 3 Finale

The Rookie is rounding out its third season with a finale on May 16 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. In the finale, Nolan mildly injures himself while chasing down a shoplifter and the local DA wants to charge the suspect with assault despite Nolan’s wishes. Meanwhile, Lucy goes undercover, Lopez’s wedding venue is seized by the FBI, and Nolan meets his new neighbor. Jenna Dewan guest stars as Nolan’s date to Lopez’s wedding. Plus, there may be some development between Chen and Bradford at the wedding since he wants her to save him a dance!

‘Run The World’

Run The World is a new STARZ series that premieres on May 16. The show is a story of a group of Black women – vibrant, fiercely loyal best friends – who work, live, and play in Harlem as they strive for world domination. Run The World is an unapologetically female show about enviable friendship and not only surviving but thriving together. The show stars an amazing ensemble cast that includes Amber Stevens West, Andrea Bordeaux, Bresha Webb, and Corbin Reid.

‘Those Who Wish Me Dead’

Those Who Wish Me Dead is a new film starring Angelina Jolie that was released in theaters and on HBO Max on May 14. The Oscar winner plays Hannah, a smoke jumper still reeling from the loss of three lives she failed to save from a fire when she comes across a traumatized 12-year-old boy with nowhere else to turn. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Finn Little, Aidan Gillen, Medina Senghore, Tyler Perry, Jake Weber, and Jon Bernthal. The film is directed by Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone.

‘Halston’

Halston is a new limited series from Ryan Murphy and his camp that premiere May 14 on Netflix. The show follows the legendary fashion designer as he transforms into a worldwide fashion empire that’s synonymous with luxury, sex, status, and fame. Ewan McGregor stars as Halston, alongside Krysta Rodriguez as Liza Minnelli, Rebecca Dayan as Elsa Peretti, Bill Pullman as David Mahoney, Gian Franco Rodriguez as Victor Hugo, David Pittu as Joe Eula, Sullivan Jones as Ed Austin, Rory Culkin as Joel Schumacher, Kelly Bishop as Eleanor Lambert, and Vera Farmiga as Adele.

‘PRIDE’

PRIDE is a six-part documentary series that chronicles the struggle for LGBTQ+ civil rights in American from the 1950s until today. The series will air over two nights starting May 14 at 8 p.m. ET on FX and concluding on May 21. All episodes will be available the day after premiering on FX on Hulu. The evolution of trans rights and identities through the decades is explored through interviews and archival footage of pioneers including Christine Jorgensen, Flawless Sabrina, Ceyenne Doroshow, Susan Stryker, Kate Bornstein, Dean Spade, and Raquel Willis.

‘Hacks’

This is Jean Smart’s world, and we’re just living in it. In addition to Mare of Easttown, Jean is also starring in the new series Hacks. The Emmy-winning actress plays a larger-than-life comedy legend named Deborah Vance who finds her career in jeopardy. Deborah is forced to work with an entitled 25-year-old writer on the outs for some controversial jokes. Together, they form a complex mentorship that redefines their careers in comedy. Hacks premiered on May 13 with the first two episodes on HBO Max. New episodes will be released weekly.
