Buffalo Bills star Damar Hamlin is communicating again after suffering a cardiac arrest on the field on Monday.

The 24-year-old’s first response since waking in hospital saw him ask who won the match against the Cincinnati Bengals in writing.

“Damar, you won – you won the game of life,” replied Dr Timothy Pritts, who revealed to reporters the fact that Hamlin was asking about the match showed “it’s not only that the lights are on – he’s home.

“It appears that all cylinders are firing within his brain, which is greatly gratifying.”

Hamlin remains on a ventilator in the intensive care unit at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, which is assisting his breathing.

But two physicians have remarked that the Bills safety is making brilliant progress and “demonstrating signs of good neurological recovery”, as indicated by his ability to write.

He collapsed on the field in the first quarter of the game against the Cincinnati Bengals after making a tackle on Monday night at the Paycor Stadium.

CPR was performed on him while still on the pitch to restore his heartbeat after receiving immediate attention from team medics before local paramedics took over.

While there is a long road ahead for Hamlin, Dr William Knight said: “He has been very sick and has made a fairly remarkable recovery.”

Hamlin’s team-mate and Bills quarterback Josh Allen was overcome with emotion when he heard the news that his friend was responsive again.

“His dad said the first thing he is going to ask when he wakes up is ask who won the game,” Allen explained. “Sure enough that’s what he did.

“As teammates you love hearing that response. The first thing on his mind wasn’t ‘poor me’, it was how are my teammates doing, did we win this game, and that’s powerful in itself.

“We heard that news this morning and there was nothing that could have been told to us to bring our day down.”
