President Yoon Suk-yeol plans a state visit to the U.S. in April, a diplomatic source here said Thursday.
The source said the U.S. government “responded positively” to Seoul’s suggestion of a state visit for Yoon. It would be his first trip to Washington since his inauguration and coincide with the 70th anniversary of the bilateral alliance.
Foreign Minster Park Jin, who left for the U.S. on Wednesday, is expected to discuss Yoon’s visit when he meets U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday.
A full-fledged state visit “would be a highly symbolic event to demonstrate deepening bilateral ties,” the source added.
A government official said, “Yoon will discuss various issues like the U.S.’ extended deterrence of the North Korean nuclear and missile threats and cooperation on global supply chains.”
